The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers.
Bestselling author, Angie Fox, spoke at the July 25 Saturday Writers Meeting. Her first published novel, "The Accidental Demon Slayer" did well enough to hit the New York Times Best Seller List. Her second book in the series, "The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers" came out in May, 2009.
Angie talked about her writing experience and reminded us of a very important fact. Well known authors can get away with a lot and still sell a book. But in order to be noticed, first time authors must be different and have a strong hook.
Once Angie stopped worrying so much about rules and moved off the safe path, her best selling Demon Slayer series came into being. The surprise hit of the novel was a talking terrier named Pirate, originally written as a secondary character. He wowed reviewers and readers so much that he's featured on the covers of her books. And though I don't typically read paranormal romance, Pirate is the hook that pulled me in. I've discovered the story is good and Angie's wicked sense of humor an added bonus.
And guess what? Angie almost cut Pirate from the book because he seemed so far out. Goes to show, you have to listen to your gut.
Besides, it's like I told Angie...talking dogs aren't so unbelievable. Can't anyone who really listens hear their dog speak?
