Nature Photography Follies

Oh, to take a photo like this one by gainesp2003!

Critter photography is a wonderful thing. Though I thoroughly enjoy the point and shoot camera that I received for Christmas, I've discovered that using it for wildlife photography is a bit of a problem.

The zoom lens is not particularly long, so unless I have a very cooperative animal, good closeups are impossible. And sadly, so far promises of fame and fortune have not garnered me a single subject.

I've looked at recommended cameras/lenses for quality wildlife photography. Naturally they cost far more than what I care to spend. So for now, my little camera and I will keep on trying to get that perfect shot while I polish my technique.

H'mmm. Some say that music soothes the savage beast.

Do you think a chorus of "Stand By Me" would help?

Best Wildlife Photos

The Natural History Museum of London and the BBC Wildlife Magazine honored their choices for the top seven wild animal photos of 2008. The pictures range from the overall winner, an eerily beautiful photo of an endangered snow leopard, to a disturbing photo of a black colobus monkey's fur being singed off before being sold at an illegal bush-meat market in Gabon, to a photo of a rare black-crested macaque that is so surreal it can truly be called art. Included with the photos are short descriptions on how and where each photographer captured the prize winning selection.

Take a look at them on the National Geographic website. You'll be fascinated, unsettled, and amazed.
