What is It?

We spent the weekend in a remote heavily forested rural area of Missouri. So remote, in fact, that there was no cell phone service, no computer access, and no television. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zip.

Around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday night, six persons in our group were out walking the area. Suddenly they noticed a round, glowing, orange-colored object hovering in the treetops. It sat there for a few minutes then drifted higher, moved across the sky, and stopped. Then the object slowly faded, until it completely disappeared. There was no sound.

The best description I could get was that the object appeared similar to the way a helium balloon would look if it were carrying a candle inside.

I've been assured that no one imbibed in strong beverages before the walk.  Besides, each person describes the exact same thing.

Okay, readers. Does anyone have a clue what this could have been?

Hmm--that would be creepy. Were there any news reports later in the area?

How exciting! I just love knowing that life still holds mysteries, even if they have as-yet-undiscovered scientific explanations! I googled "swamp gas" and got this story that sounds similar, but sounds like he doesn't believe it's swamp gas, either:

Talk about intriguing. At first I thought you were describing the moon, after I read the entire description, you stumped me.

I'm still fascinated by this! Try looking up "Ball Lightning." Were there storms in the area?? There are even videos.

We didn't hear any other reports...but the area is so rural and heavily forested...can't imagine who else would see it except for wild critters...and they're not talking!

There was no explosion or strange smells. Apparently the thing just sort of floated until it "burned out" by fading away!

Crazy, huh?

So that's where my giant Florida orange ball escaped to!

Now I have closure. Thank you,

When he was a kid, my husband and his brothers launched his own miniature, homemade hot air balloon complete with a little fire. It raised into the sky and burned itself out. It sent the nuns in the nearby convent into a panic.

However, I'm leaning towards Tammy's explanation.

Interesting...I, too, thought it was the moon at first. My husband and I (and about ten others) pulled off the highway to watch a huge orange ball rise into the sky. We could actually see it moving! The higher it climbed the smaller it became, but we all watched it for a good thirty minutes before realizing it was, indeed, the moon. We--and everyone else who stopped in their travels to watch the huge orange ball--thought it was something else. I've never seen anything like it before or since.

Are they sure it wasn't the moon. But guess it would have stayed up there longer. That is interesting. Must have freaked everyone. Have a great day.
