Test Results Say...

Here we go again! The vet called on Saturday to advise that Indy's tests do not indicate Cushing's Disease, though she added that it's possible he could be so early in the disease that it doesn't show up yet.  She suggested three possible options:

1. We can be referred for an ultrasound to see if anything appears to be amiss.

2. We can be referred to an internal medicine veterinary specialist for evaluation.

3. We can monitor things and see how he does.

H'mm. I can't imagine a disease showing symptoms before it shows up in lab work. Symptoms typically come after a disease has advanced. Therefore, I don't think it's Cushing's.

Suppose after even more tests we don't have any answer? It doesn't make sense to keep looking for something that may not exist. Indy is his normal self in every way, except he drinks and potties more than most dogs. Perhaps it's simply normal aging. Besides, the urgency to drink seems to have slowed a bit...it could have come from the hot days of summer.

In any event, I've decided to monitor things for now. Like most of Indy's peculiarities, we might not be able to pin this one down, either, and vets don't always have the answers. Instead of running to another vet and paying yet another bill, we'll wait this one out.

On to other topics. We attended a barbecue that turned into a sort of weekend affair. The band played on and on as people ate, drank, and made merry. Many spent the night on Saturday. In fact, so many tents were pitched on the grounds, it looked like a Tent City!

Indy attended the festivities, and was quite helpful as the thermometer dipped.

The temperature made for a perfect one dog night!

I agree, too. Why put Indy through more tests, and you guys spend more money...kind of needlessly? WE MOMs know our babies best, anyway!! Sounds like a fun weekend...and I love the One Dog Night!! :D

I would agree to do the wait and see choice--I hope your week is great!

Sound like a good plan to me. Sure glad he is feeling good and slacking off on the drinking some. These things generally either get better or get worse, so time should tell.

Hi Pat, I have tried and tried to get to you!!!!!!!! I could write a book on all the crazy things that have been happening:( I won't spend the time___
We woke to a cooler than usual morning this morning too. It is strange b/c we usually don't get cooler until the end of Oct.
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.
Come for a visit if you can.

I think you're making the right choice. My senior dog Snoopy who is 13 or 14 does drink a lot too, but is generally healthy in every other way. My vet initially suspected diabetes, but that came back negative. Doesn't seem to make sense to drive yourself to the poor house over endless tests that come back as inconclusive when he is healthy in all other respects.

As long as Indy is feeling ok, that's what matters.

It sounds like a fun weekend!

Hope Indy's okay, and that it just has to do with the weather or something.

I'd take that as good news, especially since your little guy is behaving normally. Not exactly enough to eliminate your worry, but certainly reduce it, and that counts for something. Perhaps whatever has been causing his symptoms will run its course and he'll be fine.

Your weekend sounds like a real party time! We went to a festival put on by DREAM, a Dachshund rescue organization. Such fun!

Hi Pat,

Indy's problem must be caused by something in your house that affects only males. At the weekend party I noticed your husband displayed Indy's symptoms!

I used to have a dog that drank very little and ended up with bladder stones. I'm with Linda--no news is good news! Glad you are able to focus on happier things now!

HI Pat,
I don't like putting Bambi through tests just to see what turns up either. Usually when a dogs starts drinking a lot of water it is b/c his kidneys are starting to fall. Amanda started and the vet took blood and nothing showed up but it was her kidneys. We knew in 6 months and then it was supposedly too late to reverse. I know better now.
I am not now your blog list, did you know that??
