The Moment Most Dogs Dread

This afternoon, to Indy's complete dismay, he had a bath. Once I start getting complaints from the family about his too-pungent scent, we simply can't put off the process any longer.

Unfortunately, that boy is too smart for his own good. He knows what's up the minute I head for the bathroom with plastic cup and his special shampoo.  Then it becomes a merry game of catch-me-if-you can before I'm able to finally grab his collar and hoist him into the shower.

To make things easier, I shed my clothes and go into the enclosure with him. It might sound weird, but it really works out well. That way every time Indy decides to shake off excess water or shampoo (which tends to be about 12 times per minute) it doesn't matter at all.

The agony is in the soap and water, but the ecstasy begins as soon as he's toweled dry. Then it's zoomies around the room, rolling on the carpet, snorting, snuffling, and a general demonstration of doggie delight.

Indy insists that sofas make superior bath towels.

Once he finally feels every stray droplet of water has been removed, it's time to stand for inspection, fur prickled up like a procupine.

With approval, comes relief.

Indy: "Glad that's done. I won't need another bath for a loooong time, will I Mom?"

Me: "That's right, Indy. You just keep on telling yourself that."

Tell me, is this what bath time is like at your house? Do you have critters who are bath time aficionados, or are they more like don't-get-me-wet-I-might-melt scardey cats?

"Scardey cat-schmardey cat. I take a bath every day. And Mom doesn't do it for me, either. She gets way too many hairballs."

This is EXACTLY what happens with Oskar. Must be a schnauzer thing. The bath itself is like we are torturing him & then the post bath zoomies and couch wrestling with himself commence!

Hugs,
Pam, Oskar's mom person

I have a terrible time with my dogs, but give them a lake or less than pristine water and they will dive in.

After a full day of kayaking, and Toby jumping into the water multiple times, we kept our bathing suites and got into the tub with Toby because we were on vacation and thought Toby might get a little freaked alone in a new tub.

It was the worst experience ever! He freaked out more with us in there.

On a regular basis he's not that bad when it comes to baths. He just freezes and doesn't move the whole time.

Stella knows what is about to happen if we been out for a walk and I let her harness stay on when we get home. She is not a happy girl then.

Ha, Pat, you made me laugh, it took me back to when I had dogs who did exactly the same thing.

LOL Perfect description of the bathing process. I'll have to try the shower idea...my guys try to climb out of the tub and we (my hubby and I double-team them) get soaked. They always look miserable during too, as if we've done something to humiliate them. Then when they get out it is joyful bliss for 20 minutes while they run, roll, and rub themselves dry/damp. So funny!

Indy that is terrible.. I hate to take a baff so I know just how you feel. I think running away from the whole thingy was a good idea. Sorry you got caught though.

I like the after baff zoomies too.

BaaaWaaaaah... Love the Hairball thingy at the end.. BaaaaWaaaah

Indy and stumpy must have attended the same anti-bath rallies. I see VERY similar avoidal tecniques. Bath day is coming up here, pretty darn soon! I can put it off a little longer if we get to the lake this week.

Nice entry. I can relate completely.

When I was in the Air Force, I was in the K-9 force. When it was bath time at the kennels they all got that "Oh, no" look in their eyes. Very few dogs were willfully compliant. We told them that the manual said "your dog will enjoy his bath" but it never seemed to help.

Come to think of it, some of the handlers didn't like baths either.

Omg, you just described my dog's bath exactly. Right down to those post-bath, snorting zoomies!

Sounds like deja vue! Ryker has had a lot of baths lately as we wait for all the mud to t=dry up. It is almost there.
The post bath zoomies are the best... we call it "towelly time" and Ryker has a big beach towel that he throws himself on and rubs and wiggles on to get himself dry. He gets so excited!
I just love it, makes me laugh every darn time!

PS. Ryker often showers with me if he needs a bath. Once he even showered with me and his dad... gotta save water you know.

Oscar will hop right into the bathtub every time he's in the bathroom, and will sit pretty still when it's bath time. He goes batty after though - running around like crazy and rubbing his face on absolutely everything.
