Joplin Adoptathon
If you're looking for a new furry family member, consider checking out a major adoptathon taking place this weekend, June 25-26, in Joplin, Missouri. The event is sponsored by the Joplin Humane Society and the ASPCA.
Since there are so many rescues (over 900 at last count) from the massive tornados that literally wiped out much of the town, adoptive fees will be waived for the event. All other adoption procedures remain in place. Each animal has been spayed/neutered, microchipped, and is up to date on immunizations. Take a look at one of many rescues who will be available for adoption. Who could resist that face?
Find it in your heart to adopt a homeless animal. But if you can't make it to Joplin, don't worry. I'm certain your local shelter has many dogs and cats that also need a loving home.
On a side note, one of my friends volunteered at the Joplin shelter last weekend. I was hoping for pictures and a story from her, but it turns out all the tornado rescues are in a separate donated building. No one but regular staff is allowed to handle them. This is done to reduce stress on the animals, so it's very understandable. The ASPCA is overseeing the Joplin effort. They have a lot of experience with disasters, and know how to run things smoothly. Volunteers have been instrumental in helping the organizations keep up with all the additional tasks brought on by the devastating tornados.
I'm praying that every animal in need (no matter where) will find a permanent, loving home!

What a great event. I hope they have a super-duper turnout.

Awww, I'll spread the word since I'm unable to adopt a pet... but sounds like a great event. I hope they all get homes!

Oh, what a sweet little baby! I do hope, too, that all the special critters find new homes!
Hoping that all of them no matter how old or young, small or large find a loving home.
We just went through getting the tornado dogs of Georgia (yes there was a tornado in Georgia at the same time as the ones in Alabama - but no one's heard about them). The last ones got adopted out.
Lovely - thanks so much for my first laugh of the morning!
I'm dropping by the pet blog hop today - stop by to see the gorilla at the Calgary Zoo enjoying a little fun: http://www.pet-peeves.org/2011/06/25/calgary-zoos-breakdancing-gorilla/
Please leave a comment back today - I'd appreciate it!
We have our paws crossed that all those furry furiends find their forever homes!
Am heartbroken that so many need help...and uplifted that so many of you are giving it. Prayers for all of you.
Here's hoping they all find wonderful homes!
You are an angel.
