The digital age has changed the way I store photos. They're all on my phone, my computer, or my camera. But I have piles of pictures in my basement from years ago and there's no task more time consuming than sorting through them. This weekend I tackled several boxes filled with photos, determined to organize the shots. My plan of attack went something like this...
Category 1- What the Heck is That?
Really? Who wants to see that? All the terrible shots that showcase blurred images and overexposed film must go. If it's not worth framing or putting in a scrap book, hold nose and put in trash.
Category 2- When?
Put photos in chronological order. Easier said then done, unless someone thoughtfully penciled in the date on the back of the photo. 1960? 1961? Who knows?
Category 3- Awww!
Distractions, distractions. I totally get stopped in my tracks over the older pictures. The one above is me at about age 6 with my doll buggy on the sidewalk in front of Grandma's house. The pup standing next to me is Peggy. Peggy belonged to the neighbors up the street, but she made it a habit to come down and visit me each day.
How I loved to pretend Peggy belonged to me. I stared at the picture and an incident that happened with her came to mind. The next thing I knew, photos fluttered to the floor as I ran for the computer to tap away at a new story idea.
Yep, just like I said. It takes me forever to sort through pictures.

My MOM just leaves them in the photo album and the one box. She is not brave enough to tackle that job. So paws up to you for even attempting.

Our mom did that a couple of years ago... it took FurEVER.
Now she has them all on CD's.
That's exactly why I never manage to sort my photos, old "real" ones or digital. Some I pause over; some are too painful. I admire you for tackling that huge task and hope you post more old photos.
I know exactly what you mean. I tried to categorize my pictures not long ago, but the trip down memory lane slowed me down, and I ended up grouping by person and putting them in Zip Loc bags. Glad you got a story out of it.
Our friends just had all of his digitally copied and stored and yes it was quite a job. Have a marvellous Monday.

When you think of the money we used to spend on film and having them developed (so speaks a woman of a certain age).
I get about 4 out of every 20 pics of the mutts that aren't blurred so thank heavens for digital.

When my kids were little I was good about dating photos that came back from the developer and putting them in albums. And then--poof!--something happened and I stopped doing it. Now I have hundreds of photos stacked, boxed, and layered in multiple places. The idea of sorting through them terrifies me almost as much as the thought of ever having to part with them. :)
Old photos are like that, so full of memories. I have drawers and boxes full...and no one to pass them on to as I am the last of the line. Guess I don't have to organize them then.
Can't wait to read that! It is such a difficult job... I have a stack on my desk to scan right now! UGH!
Mommy needs to sort thru old pictures too.
I have tons of old pictures too. Some from my Grandpa and Grandma, some well really lots from my Mom who has been gone 8 years now!!! I don't have any place to put them either. You can see them when you walk in my house!!

That photo is so cute of you and "your" doggy. I was just looking at a few old photos myself, but I stopped because I knew I'd never get the job done that I was working on. I'm sure your story is a good one!
I just discovered some digital photos on my camera of eyes and a few distorted face pictures. I'm guessing my two year old granddaughter was practicing with the camera.

The point is that you are accomplishing something, even if it's not what you'd originally intended. Adorable picture!
