A Dog's Life

Last weekend, my son, DIL, their pup Brady, and I participated in Trails for Tails, a fundraising event to benefit Five Acres Animal Shelter. Some of you may remember last year when we caught up with David Backes (team captain of the St. Louis Blues Hockey team) at this event. David and his wife, Kelly serve on Five Acres' Board of Directors. Sadly, we didn't get to see "The Man" this year.

A large and enthusiastic crowd turned out.

Our little group bravely started the 5K together, but Brady quickly grew weary of going the distance. He planted his butt on the trail and refused to move another step. We didn't give up. Instead we decided to carry on to the finish line.

Carry the dog on to the finish line, that is. He rode in style, with each of us taking a turn staggering along the path while carrying 24 pounds of Cairn Terrier. We finished dead last.

I think you can officially call Brady a very pampered pup.

Pat--That's the best kind of pup to be.

I once went to the same puppy mill auction as Kelly Backes. She was pretty disgusting. It was pouring down rain all day, of course it was out in the country in a muddy field, and the group I was with was a muddy, wet mess. However, Kelly (built like a pencil), in stylish rain boots, didn't even sink into the muck.

Five Acres--that day--rescued 40 dogs I think. (They had a huge van full of small dogs.) Her husband once donated a hockey jersey to raffle off for Love a Golden Rescue. (He is the prettiest hockey player I've ever seen.) They are great people when it comes to animal rescue in St. Louis and St. Charles.

I guess you'll need a doggie stroller for the next 5K!

This is funny, and proves Brady knows how to get what he wants.

Brady is one smart terrier. lol And what is it with hockey players? So many of them are just too cute.

The race doesn't always go to the swiftest. It's a great accomplishment that you finished!

That is so funny! Maybe Brady will con his parents into buying him a sled so that he can become a sled dog next time.
