Cartoon Critters

Marmaduke by Brad Anderson

Have you taken a look at the comic strips lately? It seems that critters are highly represented there, possible because that little balloon coming from an animal's mouth can include things that wouldn't be as meaningful or funny if it came from a person's. A writer enjoys a whole different type of freedom when writing from an animal's point of view. Take Marmaduke the Great Dane, the street-wise dog and cat characters of Get Fuzzy, the wise-cracking rat of Pearls Before Swine, and the Prima Donna kitten of Rose is Rose. The strips simply wouldn't be the same without them.

So in honor of cartoon critters, I'll devote next week's blog to my top five all time favorites. Will yours make the list?

Tune in next week to find out!

My boys always loved Felix the Cat--so when we adopted a tiny black kitten, they named him Felix. He was our faithful friend and companion for nearly a dozen years before we had to see him off to a better place. I still miss him. He was wiser than many humans I know!
